  • Premier Announces Changes to Cabinet

    In keeping with the Throne Speech commitment for the creation of a new government department dedicated to children, youth and families, the Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the appointment of a new Cabinet minister to lead that department. A new Minister of Education was also announced as the Provincial Government continues with a strong emphasis on education.     Provincial Government Supports Cultural Tourism in Change Islands

    The Stages and Stores Heritage Foundation, Inc. in Change Islands is receiving $26,750 from the Provincial Government to form a knitting économusée. This initiative combines tourism with knowledge of traditional knitting techniques to demonstrate an indigenous craft to visitors seeking an interactive cultural experience.

    “The Provincial Government has taken an active role in working with craft producers to identify opportunities that will strengthen the province’s cultural tourism industry,” said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. “This initiative is valuable as Fogo Island and Change Islands emerge as a destination for visitors seeking a unique cultural experience.     23 Community Groups Receive Provincial Wellness Grants

    The Provincial Government is continuing to invest in the health and well-being of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians through the Provincial Wellness Grant program. This year, 23 organizations and groups received a total of $322,000 in funding.

    Today, the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Health and Community Services, presented one of those organizations, the St. John’s Women’s Centre, with a $25,000 wellness grant for Nurturing Health and Wellness, a joint project involving the Namaste Program for Women. Continue Reading >>

    Rural Secretariat Region: Gander-New-Wes-Valley

    The Twillingate-New World Island Development Association received $4,000 towards the New World Island Regional Recreation Initiative. The objective of this initiative is to improve the physical health of residents of New World Island. Funding will be used to build capacity for partnership development and to conduct a needs assessment, which will help guide this initiative.     Boyd’s Cove – Stronghold of the Beothuk

    The sheltered inlet of Boyd’s Cove (and the twin settlement of Boyd’s Harbour), due east of Chapel Island in central Notre Dame Bay, forms the junction between Route 340 and the Reach Run causeway. The town’s name supposedly honours a New World Island logger by the name of Boyd who harvested timber in the area. Although its history as a European-settled community is relatively recent, the area was inhabited for centuries by a number of Aboriginal groups, the last being the Beothuk.
