The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was in Torbay today to announce that, through the 2009 Community Capital Grant Program (CCGP), $559,900 has been allocated to support renovations and upgrades to recreation and sports infrastructure in 41 communities throughout the province.
“By investing in our infrastructure, we are fulfilling one of the key objectives of the provincial recreation strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Jackman. “The funding is designed to improve recreation facilities and equipment, and thereby encourage all citizens, young and old alike, to increase their participation in physical activity.”
The Community Capital Grant Program is an application-based program that provides grants of up to $15,000 to assist community-based recreation organizations improve their recreation and sport infrastructure. Since the program was established in 2007, $1.6 million has been allocated to communities throughout the province.

The Town of Torbay, as an example, has been granted $15,000 to purchase new playground equipment and to generally upgrade the surrounding recreation area.
“I am very pleased to be a part of this announcement,” said Kevin Parsons, MHA for Cape St. Francis. “Torbay has an excellent recreation program, and $15,000 will certainly help to make it even better. The District of Cape St. Francis, as a whole, is benefitting from this investment in recreation.”
Torbay Mayor Bob Codner also welcomed the announcement.
“This is another fine example of the excellent financial support the Provincial Government provides to municipalities such as the Town of Torbay,” said Mayor Codner. “Sincere appreciation is also extended to MHA Parsons for his continued support and cooperation.”
Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation provided an additional $875,000 for recreation and sport initiatives designed to achieve the goals outlined in the province’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). In the past three years alone, more than $8 million in new funding has been invested in the recreation and sports sectors.
