Derrick Dalley, MHA for the District of The Isles of Notre Dame, today welcomed the recent announcement by the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, that the community/communities of Cottlesville, Fogo Island Central, Herring Neck, Joe Batt’s Arm-Barr’d Island-Shoal Bay, Newville, Stag Harbour and Summerford have received a total of $28 000 through the newly-established Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program. The Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program is an application-based program that provides up to $4,000 to assist in the delivery of new or enhanced, recreational programs and services. It is designed to provide older citizens with more opportunities to engage in physical activities and to lead healthier, more active lifestyles. “The Seniors Community Recreation Grant is a great indication of the commitment the Provincial Government has to the health and fitness of all residents of the province,” said MHA Derrick Dalley. “With the help of the grants, the community groups will be able to continue to provide facilities and recreational programs that are essential to the well being of seniors in their respective areas. Physical fitness is fast becoming an important concern for seniors and health providers and the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation has made it a top priority.” More than 100 province-wide grants, totaling $387,200, have been provided through the Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program, which is being delivered in collaboration with the Department of Health and Community Services as part of its Healthy Aging Policy Framework.
